While we don't know too much about Nurse Holmes, we can only imagine the discrimination, challenges and hardship she must have endured as a healthcare trailblazer, and we honor her.

Dr. Jovans Lorquet, PGY1, is the first MD in his f Dr. Jovans Lorquet, PGY1, is the first MD in his family. He is honored to serve others and be a positive role model for so many young black men and women. His passion for helping the sick, especially the underserved, keeps him motivated everyday.

He created an organization “Change the City”, whose main focus was to help those in need in his native country, Haiti. Alongside his family’s organization, the Lorquet Foundation, they have been very active on the island. During hurricane Matthew in 2016, they were able to send useful goods to the most affected areas through numerous fundraisers. Dr. Lorquet is eager to continue to use his medical training to serve not only his local community in Florida, but participating in disaster relief in his home country.

Service and Community. These are 2 key driving fa Service and Community.

These are 2 key driving factors that led Dr Timothy Julien to choose the field of emergency medicine, and continue to motivate him each and every day. In addition to caring for patients or teaching medical students, residents or staff, Dr. Julien loves to teach, mentor and inspire middle and high school students to follow their dreams. Having role models is essential for improving the diversity of our healthcare force and ensuring that the next generation of physicians understands and represents the patients who we serve.

Rebecca Lee Crumpler, MD – American Medical Trai Rebecca Lee Crumpler, MD – American Medical Trailblazer

in 1864, Dr. Crumpler became the first African American female physician. At a time when there were very few allowed to attend medical school in the US, faced tremendous racism and sexism during her career. She focused on providing healthcare to Boston and Richmond VA’s poor women and children. She wrote and published “The Book of Medical Disclosures” a guide on infant and women’s health.

As the specialty of emergency medicine, there is much work we need to do to address racial and gender disparities in our house – Dr. Crumpler was a true trailblazer and instrumental in changing the face of medicine.
